The Best Towns in Ireland for a Weekend Away

You know the saying, “there’s no place like Ireland in the sun”, and it’s true! Now is the time to grab the gang, pack the car and head on a road trip for some sight-seeing, activities and fun. 1. Westport

Known as ‘the riviera of the Wild Atlantic Way’, Westport is bursting with colour and culture. With rugged coastlines that are perfect for water sports, the Greenway cycle track to Achill Sound and lots of buzzing bars it’s easy to see why Westport is a favourite among both tourists and natives. If your group is into camping head to Westport House for one of Ireland’s most beautiful campsites. 

2. Lahinch

Lahinch is a surfer’s paradise and the perfect spot for a group session with your mates. Book with the local surf school for a lesson and you’ll be provided with all the necessary equipment and guidance for a great surfing experience Afterwards you can hit the town for some drinks, live music, good grub and great craic.

3. Bundoran

Another top spot for surfing, Bundoran town is filled with electric atmosphere from the collection of locals, surf enthusiasts and everyone else in between. Live music can be found every night in one of the many pubs and the town’s location on the Wild Atlantic Way promises stellar waves for surfing. Surfs up.

4. Carlingford

Carlingford is a one stop shop for adventure. You and your group can take part in a huge range of activities including rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and lots more. If your gang is interested in history, the town has a rich medieval history that can still be seen today through its cobblestone pathways and gothic architecture.

5. Dingle

Take the group to Dingle for beautiful natural scenery, water sports and, of course, to see the town’s biggest celebrity: Fungi the dolphin. You can also see penguins, otters and sharks at Dingle’s OceanWorld Aquarium. The town itself is filled with interesting shops, top quality eateries and friendly pubs - an ideal spot for a trip if you ask us. 

6. Kilkenny

Part of Ireland’s Ancient East, Kilkenny is a medieval town filled with historical sites, craft shops, pubs, and restaurants that will impress any “foodies” in your group. Extremely popular among groups of friends, hen parties and stag parties, you’re guaranteed a great night out in Kilkenny. Any avid shoppers in your group? They’re in for a treat - Kilkenny is full of amazing boutiques such as Folkster and Tiffany Shoe Boutique. 

7. Kinsale

Kinsale marks the end (or beginning) of the Wild Atlantic Way and is surrounded by picaresque views, coloured houses, delicious food, fishing spots and a world-class golf resort - if you’re into that kind of thing. And, if you’re a brave bunch, why take a trip on the Kinsale Ghost Tour leaving from the Tap Tavern at 9pm nightly.

8. Clifden

The route to Clifden bring you past some terrific scenery before finally locking eyes with the town’s mountainous backdrop that’s so beautiful it almost looks fake. Known as the capital of Galway’s Connemara, Clifden is a coastal town that home to Ireland’s Best Traditional Bar. There’s lots to do in Clifden. Take your pick from cycling, horse riding, stand up paddle boarding, golfing, fishing, rafting, rock climbing and more. 

9. Portrush

Located just across the border in Northern Ireland’s Antrim, Portrush has it all: amazing food, brilliant golf courses, lively bars and nightclubs to dance in afterwards. Having hosted this year’s Open Championship, Port Rush’s golf course is the North’s most prestigious golf. The town has had a mini makeover to celebrate and is well worth a visit. 

10. Gorey 

Believe us when we say there’s more to Wexford than strawberries - although they are delicious! Relive your childhood at the amusement parks and arcades, have a game of bowling and take your pick from the selection fantastic golf courses.
